The scan really doesn't do this justice, first off. It shimmers and glows in real life.
To begin, "Bei Nacht" is German for "One Night".
This piece is a deeply personal piece involving some heavy pain and reconciliation in my own life. It was originally titled "Two Swords" in order to fit well with my tarot imagery, but the piece took a turn for the personal about halfway through my process. The result is one of the most beautiful and painful things I have ever created (in my opinion, of course)
This is a nightingale crying up to the violet sky, but no one can hear it. A malevolent black braided cord (one end cut) holds two bloodied needles, and forms an almost noose-like shape near the neck. Two blue/violet roses covered in thorns (which are also bloodied, this cannot be seen in the scan, sadly) flank its wings.
Scratchboard and heavy amounts of watercolor. No digital retouching; this is 100% traditional. The original is 10x16 inches with a small black border, but due to scanning constraints it is a little off that here.

Gorgeous!! That is seriously the only word I can find for this piece. Even without reading your Artist's note I could feel the Pain and resolution that sear through it. I love it!
